Film festival to showcase local talent

A NEW annual film festival will take place in November 2014, called the Golden Island Film Festival (GIIFF), aiming at supporting the Cyprus film industry.

The festival will include fiction and documentary films, both short and feature length, from countries around the world.

Although the film festival’s organisers come from the north, they said on Saturday they want to make the festival an island-wide event and are calling on all Cypriots interested in film to get involved. The festival will not only showcase a selection of Cypriot produced films, but also offer significant cash prizes for Cypriot films entering its competitions.

GIIFF will screen contemporary international films in specific areas of interest. In this first year, these will be UK Cinema, Human Rights, Women, the Environment, and “Journeys” (both emotional and physical).

One of the festival’s patrons is London-based Turkish Cypriot actor Tamer Hassan. Hassan has appeared in a number of Hollywood movies, such as Batman Begins, Kick Ass, Layer Cake and Clash of the Titans. Hassan has also appeared on TV, in series such as 24: Live another day and NCIS.
